2005 TOWN CLERK & TREASURER REPORT

During the past year the Clerk’s office remained busy processing 826 passports, issuing 47 marriage licenses, 4 civil union licenses, 33 Green Mountain Passes, and 113 fish & wildlife licenses.  Passport processing has nearly doubled since the government announced plans for stricter controls on people leaving and entering the country.

Approximately 3,865 documents were recorded into the land records.  This means 14,678 pages were added into 15 new books.  Shelving space for the books is being used up rapidly.  We have looked at proposals to add more shelving to our existing space, however, the options are very limited.

At the State level the new Statewide checklist was implemented this year.  This is still in testing but should be completely operational by the end of the summer of 2006. Changes have occurred to the HS-131 residency filing form.  The date due is April 15 with July 15 being the deadline for late filing in order to have corrections made to taxes.  This form needs to be filed every year if you are a Vermont resident and own and occupy your homestead on April 1.

Last March a recount was requested for the school budget vote.  This was accomplished quickly with no change in the outcome.

Approximately 4200 tax bills were released in July.  A fairly large number of people forgot to file their HS-131 form with the State.  This resulted in a substantial number of revised bills having to be printed.   It is also important to remind you to keep a copy of your bill.  You will need it when you do your taxes and file your HS-131 form as well as for your escrow company if you have one.

We also would like to welcome our Town Clerk Deb Beckett back. She was deployed last year at this time and has safely returned to her duties here as Clerk and Treasurer.

Respectfully submitted,
